Orland, CA Area Guide: A Glenn County Farm Town

By Kannon Christiansen · Published October 31, 2026 · Updated October 31, 2026

Orland, CA is the most populous city in Glenn County, with 8,298 residents at the 2020 census. It is a farming town in the northern Sacramento Valley, with Interstate 5 just west of town and Black Butte Lake about 8 miles west. It is outside Butte County, so county rules, taxes and agencies differ from Chico's.

What is Orland, CA?

Orland sits at 259 feet elevation, about 16 miles north of Willows. State Route 32 runs through downtown. The city incorporated in 1909 and gave its name to the Orland Project, one of the first U.S. Bureau of Reclamation irrigation projects (1908). During World War II it hosted an Army airfield, now a civil airport run by Glenn County.

What is life like in Orland?

It is a rural farming community, known as the Queen Bee Capital of North America for its queen bee production. Annual events include the Queen Bee Festival in June and OktoBEEfest in October, and the Honeybee Discovery Center museum is in town. Black Butte Lake, about 8 miles west, is the nearby recreation spot.

Which schools serve Orland?

Orland Joint Unified School District (PK to 12) includes Fairview Elementary, Mill Street Elementary, C.K. Price Middle School, Orland High School and North Valley Continuation High School. The private North Valley Christian School is also in town. Verify boundaries by address.

What should you know before buying in Orland?

Because Orland is in Glenn County, property tax add-ons, building permits and the county recorder are different from Butte County's. Ask me about those differences before you write an offer. I look at roof, drainage, electrical, and for rural parcels the well and septic system first. Confirm insurance in writing before you remove contingencies.
